Not every coconut is equally good. A few quick checks make the difference between sweet, full coconut water and a disappointing one.
Choosing a good tender coconut
- Heavy for its size. A coconut full of water feels heavier than it looks.
- Shake it. You shouldn't hear much sloshing — a very full coconut is quiet. Lots of sloshing can mean less water.
- Fresh green husk. Look for a firm, green husk without large brown or dry patches.
- No cracks, mould or soft spots, especially around the top.
- No sour smell. Fresh coconuts smell mild and clean.
Opening it safely at home
- Place the coconut on a stable, non-slip surface.
- Use a heavy knife or cleaver to shave the husk off the pointed top until you reach the softer inner shell.
- Tap firmly around a small circle at the top until it cracks, then lift it off.
- Pour out the water, then split the coconut to scoop out the soft malai.
Keep your fingers well away from the blade — or choose a pre-prepared option when you order in the TENNUT app.
Storing it
- Whole coconuts are best enjoyed within a few days; keep them in a cool, shaded place.
- Once opened, refrigerate the water in a clean, covered container and drink it the same day.
- Chilled coconuts taste their best cold — if you ordered Chilled on TENNUT, drink soon after delivery.
